David and Michal
And David returned to bless his household. But Michal
the daughter of Saul came to meet David and said, "How the
king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself today
before the eyes of his servants' female servants, as one of
the vulgar shamelessly uncovers himself!
And David said to Michal,
"It was before the Lord, who chose me
above your father and above all his house, to
appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the Lord—
and I will celebrate
before the Lord.
2 Samuel 6:20-21 🙌🏻
I will make myself yet more
contemptible than this,
and I will be abased in
your eyes.
But by the female servants of whom you have spoken,
by them I shall be held in honor." And Michal the
daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.
2 Samuel 6:22-23 🕺
David returned to bless his household, to pray with them, and for them, and to offer up family thanksgiving for this national mercy. It is angels' work to worship God, surely that cannot lower the greatest of men. But even the palaces of princes are not free from family troubles. Exercises of religion appear mean in the eyes of those who have little or no religion themselves. If we can approve ourselves to God in what we do in religion, and do it as before the Lord, we need not heed reproach. Piety will have its praise: let us not be indifferent in it, nor afraid or ashamed to own it. David was contented to justify himself, and he did not further reprove or blame Michal's insolence; but God punished her. Those that honour God, he will honour; but those that despise him, and his servants and service, shall be lightly esteemed.

Reflection
A few weeks ago, I re-read about this story about David and Michal. David at this time had returned with the ark of God from Baale-judah. In remembrance, David rejoiced in celebration. Not because of what David did, but at what God did through David. As he leapt and danced before the Lord in praise. And yet not everyone followed... In particular, Michal (David's wife) despised David in her heart. As she claims David to be shameless and vulgar. How can a king behave like that?
What did David say in response to Michal? David proclaims his praise to be before the Lord and he celebrates richly in his expression of praise. Not only that. He rubs salt in the wounds and adds that he will be even more contemptible because his heart yearns to praise the Lord. In the process he will be even more hated on by Michal, more disgraced through her eyes.
Whenever I read David's story. I may understand why Michal who grew up as a royalty would think like that. And yet when I look back at my life, I experienced David's conflicted position with his significant other (S.O). There was a time when I praised and even accidentally shared very personal details about my life to others. My S.O at that time was so angry at me. Even sneering me. Why would you say that? They said. Hmm. Looking back I understand that they were concerned with their own self-consciousness. And yet I only wanted to share as in 2 Corinthians 12:9 at how in my weaknesses, Christ' power may rest upon me. Whenever I share or expose, I know a lot off different possibilities might happen.
People might take it the wrong way and find it to be rude/offsetting
People might take it the right way and find it to be encouraging/inspiring
What does God think about this? Or what would Jesus do?
In my previous life, I used to think like my S.O where my identity and actions were offset by society's norms and perceptions. And yet. As Christ saved my life, literally and metaphorically, I learnt that what others thought mattered less now. It doesn't matter if people find it the right way or the wrong way. Because aren't we all living before the presence of the Almighty? Isn't life but a fleeting vapor? And yet I now understand why David say he praised before the the Lord. His life is before Him. All that matters is what He thinks.
So, is dancing, leaping and celebrating before the Lord, even looking foolish worth it? Most people would think not. But I say yes. YES it is worth it. Because man sees appearances. But the Lord sees the heart.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You. For David & Michal's tale. It is a tragedy that David had a wife like Michal, his closest yet farthest person to understand David's heart who longed for the Lord. And yet even in the most unexpected cases; even in David's tale Your glory shines. In the midst off my own life, thank You for my own experience off "Michal" in my life. When I read David's story, my heart literally cried 😭 in resonance to this tale and how it correlates in my life. It is painful. 😭. To know that person you love does not share an intimate love for God. The tragedy through it all is that they maybe 'lightly esteemed' or punished like Michal for their insolence... Yet Lord. Please be with & forgive them, draw close to them.. And please strengthen my brothers & sisters who are experiencing this to know that we have hope in You Father..
ThankYou for reigniting my 🔥 following Jesus cannot be half way. To praise whole heartedly. To be contemptible and foolish. To know that most will reject us as they did to Him. Even if my family thinks I'm weird, even if others sneer, even if I've lost friends & business relations, even if my partner draws farther,.. I know Your grace is sufficient. As those who does the Will of my Father is my true brother, sister, & mother as Jesus says. And for those who don't please forgive them for they know not. O Lord, we lift You high once more. Even as we seem foolish, dancing, abased, hated, and whatever in people's eyes. Yet we stand before You now Lord, humbled. ThankYou Jesus for this opportunity to praise. SoliDeoGloria..! In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
